While jogging this morning, I listened to Celine Dion, one of my favorite female vocalists.  I enjoy the mental process of listening to a particular kind of music, and this morning was no exception as “Because you loved me” came into my ears. (Click her to listen to it on YouTube.)  You can follow these lyrics (since the You Tube lyrics are in Italian)

For all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I’ll be forever thankful baby
You’re the one who held me up
Never let me fall
You’re the one who saw me through it all

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith cause you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved me

You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall
I had your love I had it all
I’m grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don’t know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith cause you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved me

You were always there for me
The tender wind that carried me
A light in the dark shining your love into my life
You’ve been my inspiration
Through the lies you were the truth
My world is a better place because of you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith cause you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved me

I’m everything I am
Because you loved me

That she was singing to “Baby” (husband, I assume), shouldn’t detract from the lyrics also being relevant to God.  In fact, if you read the listeners’ comments on YouTube, you no doubt saw various God haters venting in vile terms about the song. What impressed me as I listened this morning was how a song could describe two realities at the same time.  On one hand, I can imagine a wife saying the things in this song to her husband, or the husband saying them to his wife.  Without any hesitancy, I could attribute them to Joyce.

On the other hand, because God loves us, the words are also “signing” to God.  He provided the voice of Aaron to Moses, the truth of Jesus to those surrounded by lies about Him, inspiration to Stephen when He was being murdered, strength to King David when he was fleeing for his life, knowledge to the Apostle Paul when he was lifted into the third heaven, a future to Peter when he was wallowing in the guilt of having denied Jesus.

You get the idea, I am sure – God’s love is not completely dissimilar to what we humans experience.  It goes beyond our complete understanding, but it doesn’t go less than our experience.

Making possible this kind of communication is analogical language – language that depicts truth on different levels.  It is what makes it possible to talk about God being Father, Jesus being our Redeemer, Jehovah being a Rock, new life in Jesus as being a healing, and Jesus as being Aslan the Lion.

And further, this kind of language encourages us to not be stingy in our understanding of a world that may not yet be God’s children on the deepest level, but do have some “link” points connecting them to the message of God’s love.  They are not immune to understanding that God acts because He “loved me.”

Thanks, Celine, for stirring our imagination (one of God’s gifts), because when He made us as we are, He did it because He loved us.
